Spain sets person best mark to help Hobart
Hobart sophomore Zach Spain ran a personal-best 16:46 at the Northwest Crossroads Conference meet Saturday, helping the Brickies finish third overall.
Coach Ty Artherhults said Spain has been coming on strong lately after barely competing on varsity at all as a freshman.
"He didn't crack our varsity team for a spot until the very end of the year last season," Artherhults said. "He won the junior varsity meet at the Hobart Invite as a freshman to earn his spot on the varsity for the conference meet. I'm really happy for him, because he's really worked hard to get where he is right now. He's been a good leader -- even though he's just a sophomore -- and a role model for the rest of the team."
The amazing thing about Spain's 16:46 time Saturday is, his personal record as a freshman last year was 18:36 -- so he's knocked off nearly two minutes.
"At the two-mile mark today, Zach was at his track two-mile personal record (10:37) from his freshman year," Arthurhults said. "He trained pretty hard all winter and then just went crazy all summer. We're hoping for good things."
